I didn’t get to take any photos today, and thought I would skip posting…but then I remembered a few photos I took of souvenirs! They are all stuff we bought on the drive home, so the last day. We also have a Monster Museum tee, Piggly Wiggly t-shirt, dog bowl, more fabric, shells, shells, and shells.
The top photo is the goods from Fancy Gap Fabric and Pottery Outlet. Fabric which was all 3.99 a yard, plastic/acrylic quilt block shapes which were .29 each, metal embroidery hoops (you may recall my leaving behind remorse-so I was happy to find these), beads, top hats, etc. Not pictured is the plastic mushrooms I got (and already blogged about), more ribbon, and some cute small plastic animals + deer.
The bottom photo is all the goodies we bought at South of The Border. Tanks, a smoking grenade, poppers, sparklers. We go for the mild stuff. A sticker and the fan pull, which will be added to our Christmas decorations.
Today has been a day of sewing upon sewing. I have a show coming up next month with my good pals Jenny Harada, and Spooky Daddy. You might remember our previous trio show Forest Party from 2008. Well the new show is going to be at Genuine Artikle in New York, on August 22nd. I will post much more about it as the date gets closer.

Hey Guys! My best friend, Sara ( sarabella) has entered in this Blog Your Way to Antarctica competition, for a chance to go on an educational expedition to Antarctica.
She needs as many votes as she can get. If you can help her out, you will need to register, but it is quick, and your vote would mean a lot to her and also to me, as I will be living vicariously through her blogs ABLE TO GO AS HER GUEST (!!!!) if she goes on this trip.

Future Teacher's Dream By Fur Gots July 17th, 2009 | 8:24 am
Greetings, all! My name is Sara Cole. I'm 25 years old and from Detroit, Michigan! I'm in the Teacher Education program at Wayne State University... and I have a soft spot for Science Education! I hope to teach 3rd grade one day and am a proponent of bringing class outside, and using the local environment as a place to learn!
I currently work as a Naturalist intern at Kellogg Bird Sanctuary (part of Kellogg Biological Station), one of the first bird refuges in North America. Living at a Biological Station can be lonely, but I have found great company in the birds, plants, insects, animals that surround us....
In fact, my favorite way to pass the hours is with field journalling! I even lead the "field journalling" class with K-5 graders! We teach them how to document their experiences in nature. How fantastic and unbelievable it would be to share an "Antarctica" Field Journal - the trip of a lifetime!
We look at the journals of Aldo Leopold, John Muire, & Thoreau... and of course, Rachel Carson - who set a great example for women interested in a life of science and nature. All of them left a legacy that should inspire many naturalists & scientists today, especially with the global climate crisis we are facing.
In the future, I am interested in improving science education for children, especially in the city. In 2008, I did an 8-week research project (federally funded by the McNair Scholars Program) on "Nature as a place to learn: The impact of a field experience on young children", and found that nature is a one-of-a-kind (but generally untapped) teaching medium! Imagine what a trip to Antarctica would do...
Thank you for reading, and good luck to everybody!

In honor of Harry Potter, my vegan soft serve sundae this week is all about magic! And, it's happier than the last movie :) Peanut Butter Vanilla Twist soft serve with a dark chocolate Pocky Wand, served with every flavor jelly beans! Will it be skunk, vomit or peach? There's also pencil, baby wipe and booger flavors. Yum?

| Summer Cleaning..and reading…and weeding |
[17 Jul 2009|10:32pm] |

http://www.mypapercrane.com/blog/?p=1211

Since we have been staying at home lately (we did sneak out to see the new Harry Potter yesterday woo!) I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning, moving things around, tidying, etc. I have this love for white plates, especially ones with unusual edging. I seem to have acquired quite the collection without even realizing it. All purchases second-hand of course.
There has also been a lot of reading going on. Howl’s Moving Castle which I bought for the drive to SC. My 13 yr old finished it during day one of the drive, and then once we got home I read it in about two nights. It is really good and how now prompted a hunt for more of her books. Material Obsession has me very inspired to try to branch out a bit more with quilts, we shall see. This Is For You is of course just beautiful, Tom bought it for me a few weeks ago…and Wonderland another gift from Tom. It follows the story of MaryAnn and makes a fun edition to our Alice books.
It has been raining all day long, but stopped a few hours ago so I went out and weeded all the flower beds, and garden. The garden barely needed any weeding and I feel like I owe that to Katie’s parent’s garden. They have a huge garden which they mulch with grass clippings, and I just never thought about doing that. I did it a few weeks ago and the garden hasn’t needed much weeding since. Our rainbow chard on the other hand is gone. Something came and ate every last bit of it. We had about 9 bunches growing, and this is what they all look like now.
We have harvested green beans and one cucumber so far. We were late in planting our seeds, so I am not expecting too much greatness, but it is still fun no matter what we get.
B’s foot is healing nicely. We had a check up at the doctors today, but it will be ten more days before the stitches come out. He can however now begin to walk using his heel, and that is such a relief.

| Tour Update |
[17 Jul 2009|11:11am] |
Hello friends,
Yesterday I was in a car accident just outside of Seattle, & although my passenger friend George & I are okay, my poor car is pretty wrecked. Sadly, I wasn't able to make it to Vancouver for the Biltmore Cabaret show last night, & I'm really sorry about that. I hate having to cancel shows, especially ones in beloved cities with beloved friends.
So, the good news is that I'm going to continue the tour in rented car. Fortunately, I have a couple of nice days to hang out in Anacortes for What the Heck Fest before making the marathon drive down to San Francisco for the Bottom of the Hill show on July 21. All of the dates with Concern will still happen as planned, but after Denver show on July 28, & I'm going to need to start making my way back to Seattle to return the rental car. Omaha & Iowa City, I promise I'll make it up to you soon.
So, here are the remaining dates:
7/18/09- Anacortes, WA @ What The Heck Fest (http://whattheheckfest.com) 7/21/09- San Francisco, CA @ Bottom of the Hill % 7/22/09- San Luis Obispo, CA @ SLO Art Center (1010 Broad St) % 7/23/09- Los Angeles, CA @ The Echo % 7/24/09- San Diego, CA @ The Casbah % 7/25/09- Phoenix, AZ @ Trunk Space % 7/26/09- Tucson, AZ @ Solar Culture % 7/27/09- Santa Fe, NM @ Meow Wolf % 7/28/09- Denver, CO @ Hi-Dive %
% w/ Concern
7/30/09- Omaha, NE CANCELLED!!! So so sorry. 7/31/09- Iowa City, IA CANCELLED!!! So so sorry.
See you soon, California. If you ever wondered what an airbag actually feels like, come say hi.

| barbecue & noodle salad. |
[16 Jul 2009|05:15am] |

http://bread-and-honey.blogspot.com/2009/07/barbecue-noodle-salad.html
Tonight our friends had us over for a lovely mid-week barbecue. On one of my favorite food blogs, the hilarious Sunday Williams wrote about not understanding the big deal about bbq. Let me lay it out for you, homegirl:

Cheers. Nothing compares to kicking back in someone's backyard at 6 o'clock on a weekday, sitting in one of those fugly fold-up camping chairs with the cup holders with a boozy cool beverage in one hand and a sloppy plate of something in the other. (Can you tell I was picking at roasted beets?) I mean, in this case- we really didn't even need to fire up the grill. Jason and I were coming off a week of some heavy meat dishes and neither of us were in the mood for something meaty, and one of our buddies is vegan, so the only thing we actually grilled was slabs of fresh-picked zucchini and some heads of garlic.
It's not about the food, although everyone knows that almost anything tastes better licked by flames and smoke, carcinogens be damned. It's about relaxing and talking smack with people you like and enjoying beautiful summer weather.
Also, look at this rad plate:

Anyway, as usual, I hustled around my kitchen trying to think of something nice to bring, and of course, I fell back on a delicious noodle salad. It just seems so RIGHT when you're eating a plate of something grilled to have a cold pile of noodles on your plate. I managed to cobble together this salad from a bunch of stuff I had on hand, and it came out awesome!

It's just cold cooked noodles (like 1/2 a bag), chopped tomato, cucumber, parsley, and roasted red pepper (actually, it was an orange pepper). I added a can of kidney beans, and then I made a dressing with a large dollop of tahini, thinned with lemon juice, a splash of apple cider vinegar & some olive oil. There are a lot of tahini dressing recipes online (I did a quick google search before I made it to give myself an idea of what I wanted to do) and they all thin the tahini with water, but I decided to use olive oil because I wanted the noodles to stay coated with the sauce, and I figured if I used water, it'd all soak in and they'd end up gummy and dry. Finished it off with a bunch of salt & pepper and it was awesome, mega stoked.

Outside my house yesterday! This sailboat is out there a lot, but it looked so pretty yesterday with the blue sky and clouds.
Brock's dad's 50th birthday was on Tuesday and today the family is going out to dinner to celebrate. It should be fun. We are going to Red Lobster, which is eh, but Wesley will be really excited. He LOVES Red Lobster. He's a big fan of seafood.
